Description
A hill dominating the immense Castilian prairie lands makes for an ideal lookout point. That is what the fine Romans strategists believed when they founded this site. In medieval times a castle was built by Fernando II de León, who installed his court here in 1176. The Catholic Kings are known to have paid a visit here in their travels. But over time, and with the help of Napoleon troops, the building couldn’t remain afoot, with exception of the commanding conch tower that stands still. In the early 1970s a new wing was built alongside the tower to house spacious bedrooms with stucco walls and antique furniture. Traditional medieval style is upheld in the simple and purely Castilian features, framed by the great tapestries that hand from the walls in the lounge and vestibule. Noteworthy Mudejar craftwork from a nearby church decorate the splendid tower lounge. The bar, which is reached by way of a narrow stone staircase, is sited in the admirably well reconstructed bodega and features an impressive candelabra. Almost all the rooms overlook the city or the countryside of Zamora.
