Calle Barrio Alto 8 42257 Somaén /Soria (Castilla y León|Spain)
Overwhelming due to its good taste and design. This is the qualification deserved by Manuel de la Torre's work in Somaén, a tiny village crowned by an 11th century castle in front of the Jalón River gorge on the old Madrid-Saragossa road. Built upon the remains of a farmhouse that served for charging customs for crossing the frontier between Aragón and Castile during the 18th century, this architect and restorer from Madrid has brought the maximum expression of art to this once mundane concept of a hotel with charm. Being an enthusiast of architectural restoration and an indefatigable tracker of second hand and antique shops, his posada is a hybrid showcase between 18th century classicism and contemporary bareness in which each decorative piece speaks for itself with a rare elegance among other tourist lodgings in Soria. 15th century balconies, 16th century beams and 17th chimneys, iron fittings, barber-shop armchairs, pheasant and Guinea fowl feather lamps… And, with no fear of mixing, Le Corbusier armchairs, Charles Eames chairs, Norman Foster tables, Philippe Starch handrails or an steel Las Meninas altarpiece, on loan from Manolo Valdés… Terraced like the entire village, the posada raises its stone, wood and iron framework on a garden of grass and railway splice bars cared for even in its most secluded lookouts. The recently opened annex of the Somaén Castle provides three more bedrooms and halls to the establishment. In the summer, an overhead pergola invites to an intimate candle-lit dinner.

The ground floor projects common areas such as the reception and the dining-hall, as well as a fabulous suite. Another 150 square meter suite benefits from a separate building next to the swimming pool, with views to the rocks. On the first floor the bedrooms combine luxury and comfort in endless details: all of them have their own chimneys, dressing rooms and showers in spacious bathrooms, as well as an equipment headed by a liquid crystal television.
