Carretera Ledesma km12 37115 Valverdón /Salamanca (Castilla y León|Spain)
This was the first project of Haciendas de España, the nexus of tourism and viniculture made possible with the efforts of Bodegas Arco. This hotel sets its example with history volumes from the banks of the Tormes River. The first documented reference to the estate dates to 1185, but it wasn’t until 1328 that the Dominicans acquired the property to raise a convent in 1366. Christopher Columbus himself experienced the spirituality of the lands when he passed through Salamanca on his way to the Americas. While it remains unknown whether or not he slept between the very walls of this estate, he did arrive to the nearby Dominican estate of Valcuevo. That’s how it’s told in History of Salamanca by Villar y Macías. The architect José María Pérez, known as Peridis, is the name behind of the impressive roofing in the shape of an inverted ship that encloses the wine aging bodega. The luxury hotel in the Large House is comprised of the Vinyard Bedrooms, various restaurants, a chapel and an old mill that houses the principal suite. Some bedchambers are baptized with the names of Dominicans, St. Thomas at the head; others are named after wine denominations of the Duero River; while the most obliged suits are inspired in the visit made by Columbus and his meeting with monk Diego de Deza. All of which is the work of the architect Nacho Lliso. To prolong this journey into the past, visitors may stroll along the river among cypress trees, Indian chestnuts and what may be the oldest sequoia trees in Europe.
