Description

An awe-inspiring medieval history lesson that wins the respect of guests in this castle made hotel-inn, inspired in the tradition of Inns of Tourist Interest, only with greater richness and sumptuousness. Set in Salamanca, the edifice enjoys unrivaled views of the countryside on a large estate covering 116 hectors, replete with oak, pines and poplar trees. These endless flatlands were once observed by watchmen along the castle’s ancestral fortification. The building dates to the 11th century and was revitalized in the 15th century, thanks to the Catholic Kings who turned to property over to Alonso de Valencia, in appreciation of his loyalty in seizing Zamora. It was then given to the Bishop of Ossma don Alonso Fonseca, who built the castle, as we know it today. And finally, it has come into the hands of the Fernández-Trocóniz Family, the current owners of Buen Amor. Its physical characteristics and genealogical history reveal a place more palatial than bellicose, more akin to aristocratic residency than a defense fortress. The castle displays a liking for the refined contour of every detail. Exquisite furniture is found in the lounges set around the Renaissance patio: helmets and armor, chests and cabinets, tapestries and paintings. The opulent collection contrasts with the stern stone structure with thick walls and the contemplative ambiance of the dining hall. Amidst the intricate labyrinth of domed roofs, underground chambers, narrow passageways and staircases, the bedchambers suggest contemporary touches, while embracing a noble past of irrefutable charm. Eventually some oversights in the service arise; at times the guest may feel completely alone.

ROOMS WE RECOMMEND:

Room number 30 or 53, with shower lined with slate, a brick dome ceiling, and a small window over the access bridge to the castle.

At the hotel, in either of the two rooms, or the patio of arms if the on deserving occasions. Typical products like Ham from Guijuelo, Cured Iberan Meants, Farinato from Ciudad Rodrigo and Morucha-style Veal. And in Salamanca, El Mesón. Plaza del Poeta Iglesias, 10. Tel. 923 21 72 22. This castle was declared Monument of Cultural Interest by the Decree on June 3, 1931.
It is located in the town of Villanueva de Cañedo, in the area of Armuña, in the municipal of Topas, to the northeast of the province of Salamanca. It stands along the Silver Trail, which connects Salamanca and Zamora (CN- 630, heading towards Zamora, p.k. 317,6), where the road splits at the 2-kilometer sign and leads to the hotel.
The castle originally dates to the 11th century, and was reconverted into a palace in the 15th century. The building reveals Arab and Italian influences in its decoration, while the structure reflects a typical Gothic style with a central patio that has finely adorned galleries. Another patio, hidden from sight has galleries on the forth floor and is surrounded y columns without capitals and carved arches, details that give it its unique character.

There are 45 rooms, each one different from the other, under the domed ceilings of the towers, under the original ceiling beams, with beds measuring 1,90m x 2,00m or 1,20m x 2,00m.
