Avenida Monterreal 3 36300 Baiona /Pontevedra (Galicia|Spain)
Isolated from Bayona, this hotel is sited in a place protected from the sea by the old fortress of Monte Real. Dating from the 2nd century, these walls have outlived the looting of Almanzor, were liberated by Alfonso VII from his cousin, resisted the excursions directed by the Duke of Lancaster in the late 14th century, and it was here that the Catholic Kings chose to set up a local government. And in the mid 1960s this emblematic historic inn was built over the ruins of the fortress constructed by the Count of Gondomar, defender of the domains of the successive attacks by Pirate Drake. The building is the work of architect Jesús Valverde, who let loose his fantasies, creating a labyrinth of corridors and rooms. The result is surprisingly similar to the inns that he designed in Tui and Verín. Later on, architect Ángel Fernández Alba was responsible for the remodeling of the establishment. Today the structure is composed of various bodies that occupy the space between the old merlon towers that once served to defend the river from pirates. The inn receives guests with an impressive stone staircase and delicious interior patio. Bedrooms overlook the Vigo river, and beyond the Cíes islands, a natural park that a nesting ground for many birds. All the bedrooms are spacious, with ceilings and floors graced by noble woods. The remodeling has sought to improve the distribution of the bedrooms and bathrooms too. The decorative landscape was renewed too; up until then it was anchored in the aesthetic of armors of old and Castilian woodwork. The second phase of construction was less fortunate than the first, corresponding to the redistribution of the cloister and bar area, the construction of a new gym and sauna, and four special bedrooms that occupy the old living quarters. Newly introduced halogen illumination helps create a relaxing climate. Pinewoods around the inn are sure to delight those guests who enjoy a morning stroll before breakfast.
