Description

Few clues announce the many callings to this hotel in a tiny village off the highway connecting Rivadavia with O Corbaliño in San Clodio. Mouths drop open at the sight of the monumental Romanic monastery, and also at the installations of Viña Meín and Doña Blanca, two retreats in the hands of the winemaker Javier Alén. Doña Blanca, facing the monastery at the opposite side of the Plaza Mayor, is awe-inspiring for architectural audaciousness. Over the foundations of a 19th-century schoolhouse, Fernando Blanco has carried out a renovation that boasts forms and trims of glass and steel, integrated into the old stone structure. The valley and the gardens of the monastery becomes the center of attention for those spending time at the dreamy solarium next to the flirtatious pool. And then there is the small spa of Roman inspiration, which isn’t a bad option on rainy days. Inside the chalet, bedrooms are tucked away on different levels to either side of a nave lined with wood paneling, open to and dominated by the great wood beams of the pitched roof.

THE WORST:

A little table here and there that doesn’t match well with the nicely arranged bedrooms.

ROOMS WE RECOMMEND:

Any room makes for a very enjoyable stay, whether it by the more classic rooms, like the grandmother’s room with its gallery and magnificent views, or the bedrooms with a more modernist feel.
