Barrio Iribere s/n 31711 Urdazubi/Urdax /Navarra (Navarre|Spain)
An intriguing construction with centuries of antiquity, a towering house that stands three stories high under a gable roof. It had pased through the hands of different proprietors and has carried out different functions, serving as a palatial home and barracks for the Civil Guard. The Irigoien family has inhabited it for the most years; illustrious family members include Juan de Irigoien, knight of the Order of Santiago. Having survived the passage of time and even the fires ignited by Napoleon’s troops as they returned to France, the house has been totally restored in a renovation process so careful it introduced new stones similar to the original. Some of the rooms dispose of a complete bath, while others have showers. Rooms on the top floor have slopping ceilings, and these exhibit wooden beams and magnificent views of the valley and village. The crackling sound of the old floor boards has been solved by acoustic and thermal isolation. On the first floor, the dining room serves also as a sitting room and reading room, complete with a small library specialized in Basque culture, as well as videos and movies available to guests. Outside, the porch and gardens are sited alongside the river. This house also constitutes the owner’s home, as they consider this accommodation a life project for the long run.
