Description

From the 17th century to the 21st century... An acrobatic act in Madrid’s historic center. In the fall of 2005, the chain High Tech opened the historic Posada del Peine, the oldest pension in the city according to documents that date it beginnings back to 1610 or 1616. Once again Postas Street, at the mouth of Plaza Mayor, attracts guests to the place where Juan Posada first opened the old boardinghouse right next to the principal carriage stop. Years of reforms and additions, with Juan de Villanueva there too at some point, contributed to the popular success of the hotel until it closed shop in the early 1970s. In order to resurrect the establishment, archivists at the City Hall were consulted to help recuperate architectural and decorative elements of the building, such as the clock on the façade, the flooring of the front stairway and the signs on indicating the floors and rooms…- Loads of faith have converted it into a Soho style hotel. Rather bold interior design substitutes, for now, the demands of a hotel with high technology; one must conform to a LCD screen, telephone, and Wi-Fi Internet access in the rooms. But what is for sure, very little remains of “this looks like the Posada del Piene”, a saying that alludes to misery and nocturnal furor. Now there are hydro-massage showers, a sauna and a minimalist aesthetic, at reasonable prices in the location of the everlasting comb hanging from a cord. The times have changed. And so hasn’t the Posada del Peine.

Our Critic review

THE WORST:

Breakfasts, which stick to the norm offered in urban hotels these days.

There is something for everyone: family rooms, smoking rooms and handicap accessible rooms. All with the seal of High-Tech.

ROOMS WITH VIEWS:

Breakfasts, which stick to the norm offered in urban hotels these days.

EATING:

Go for tapas along Cuchilleros Street, in typical taverns such as Cuevas de Luis Candelas and Casa Botín.

SURROUNDINGS:

The Plaza Mayor and its typical Castilian surroundings. Also the Plaza de la Paja that was once the Arab market, the Plaza del Humilladero and the streets Cava Alta and Cava Baja.
