Calle Zurbano 36 28010 Madrid (Madrid|Spain)
Luxurious and gallant to say the least, the Santo Mauro hotel is Antonio Catalan’s own personal caprice. Through his prior involvement with the hotel chain NH, and presently with AC Hoteles, this audacious businessman has put his prestige and fortune into this cour d'honneur jewel that is an indisputable reference for quaint inns in Madrid. The mansion, constructed in 1894 for the dukes of Santo Mauro, stands in one of the most elegant streets in the neighborhood of Chamberí, an area replete with diplomatic bureaus and executive offices. A 1,000 square foot garden with well groomed lawns, rosebushes, eucalyptus and Indian chestnut trees, that help to create a Parisian atmosphere (particularly if the price of land in the area is taken into consideration, which also explains the amount of the visitor’s stay). The interior decoration, entrusted to the Catalonian architect Josep Joanpere, who spoiled with exclusivity by the hotel chain has left his signature on the furniture, upholstery and some restored antique pieces. However, an integral makeover has introduced a modernization, in accord with style of the hotel chain, in the aristocratic sitting rooms on the second floor, the elegant landings, and the classic foyer. Cristal, steel and wenge wood, in harmony the rooms outfitted in adjoining house, these that exude refinement, ornamental music and dimensions difficult to find in any other hotel in Spain’s capital city. The rooms, spread out in what used to be the main residence and the stables, now transformed into duplex suites, all maintain the aesthetic which incorporates: Italian marble fireplaces, antique prints, spider lamps, abstract paintings, vibrant colored bedspreads, and tasseled key chains like in the old days. Only for lovers of luxury. Ideal for serene reading, the red sitting room. Or the front room, with views of the garden. And above all, the old oak paneled library, now occupied by the restaurant where fantastic breakfasts a la carte are savored.

Acoustic problems have not yet been completely resolved; sounds filter through the walls, however noises from off the street have been eliminated with the installation of double windows. The mansion, which has been declared a National Monument, is obligated to maintain the exasperatingly narrow and slow elevator in the white wing.
Of course, those that occupy the old stables of the mansion, transformed in duplex suits with their Italian marble fireplaces, antique prints, spider lamps, abstract paintings, vibrant colored bedspreads, and tasseled key chains like in the old days. More modern are the other rooms with their dark grey furnishings, white comforters, abstract paintings and a state-of-the-art flat screen Loewe televisions. The opening of the annex in the past year has encouraged the renovation of rooms, more accord with what is expected from such a distinguished edifice.

Just down the street form the hotel, at a walking distance begins the Paseo de la Castellana From the Plaza de Castelar to Atocha stand some of Madrid’s most sticking monuments: the National Library; the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemizsa museums; the Centro Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía; the plazas of Colón, Cibeles and Neptuno; as well as the Botanical Garden. Along the same street as the hotel, one can discover and endless number of stately façades from the late 19th century.
