Estrada Monumental 139 9000-098 Funchal /Madeira (Madeira|Portugal)
The hotel pride of the island comes from establishments like this one. Local tradition tells about the arrival in 1836 of a young Scotsman called William Reid. How a man without a penny became half a century later the godfather of a reference of luxury and distinction such as the palace that bears his name is not relevant here. What does deserve our attention is the celebrity of another period, of a very different class than that of today, proving the slightly forgotten rank of this colonial style hotel, located at the edge of a cliff upon the bay of Funchal. Sir Winston Churchill, Bernard Shaw, Captain Scott, Empress Elisabeth of Austria or the counts of Barcelona are just some of the names in the long list of distinguished guests that confirms the old prestige of Reid's Palace. But it is not just the memory of that old glory and a bunch of graphic documentation that remains, since its gardens of hibiscus and bougainvilleas, its French restaurant and, of course, its elegant rooms still preserve part of the exquisiteness of those years.
