Nestled in the foliage of an enchanting mountaintop forest, Choupana looks out over the Funchal Bay since 2002. The team formed by architects Michel de Cabaret and Miguel Mallaguerra, and the architect and designer Didier Lefort, began the project four years earlier with their eyes set on creating a place with exotic and original flare to the likings of other hostelry paradises in far away places. And it was said and done; upon eight hectors of land stands this hotel complex with 34 bungalow units housing 60 double rooms and four suites, and two common buildings with the reception area, library, meeting room and spa in one, and the bar and restaurant in the other. Amid these stone and wood constructions, there is a fantasy garden in consonance with the fusion of influences Lefort applied to the interior design whith décor inspired by the Datai in Malaysia and the Meridien in Bora Bora. Asian and African touches inherited from Portuguese journeys and conquests meet in spacious and airy rooms with high roofs sustained by solid pillars and wooden beams. This cultural fusion is also the essential seasoning in the kitchen. An interior pool with jacuzzi and another outside pool on a precious terrace with views of the Atlantic, exemplify the merit of this hotel worthy of the grand Portuguese island.
