Calle Padre José García 19 26280 Ezcaray /La Rioja (La Rioja|Spain)
A stagecoach inn with origins dating to 1698, year cited in a historic document that makes reference to this inn situated in front of the church, the same accommodations that in 1862 was lodging guests arriving in carriages. Towards the late 19th-century, the inn was acquired by Mr. Pedro Echaurren and Mrs. Andrea García, great uncles of the present-day owners. After several renovations, the hotel conserves its old facade and provides functional interiors with rustic airs offering well-appointed bedrooms. Close by: the Oja Valley and the San Lorenzo Peek, at the foot of which stands this villa; and the Valdezcaray ski station, attracting many visitors in the wintertime. However, this establishment’s most praiseworthy service is its restaurant, for the personal style and quality of the cuisine. It is directed by Marisa Sánchez, winner of the National Gastronomy Award in 1987 and expert in old recovered recipes that agreeably contrast with the gourmet creations developed by her son, Felix.

Eating at Echaurren in the Echaurren hotel was one of the most enjoyable moments of my life. Marisa was awarded in 1987 the National Prize of Gastronomy. Marisa Sanchez is an expert culinary historian with specific expertise in the recovery of ancient Spanish recipes. She and her son Felix represent five generations here in Ezcaray in cookery. Echaurren is the one-Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant adjacent to the hotel. Echaurren should be a two-Michelin-starred rating at least in the food department. I kept waiting for the next course to be less than perfect. Each and every course along with expert service was exceptional. Goat cheese with local honey was a magical journey in pleasure. Although the hotel's outdoor patio is somewhat casual in appearance, do not let this casual ambiance dissuade you from enjoying the dining room. The menu is a melding of traditional sensibility and modern technology all with the use of the highest quality ingredients. The bodega is stocked with over 300 selections of wine. Try the red kidney beans with Spanish chorizo sausage with black pudding in it. My monkfish was white and tender with sweet carmalized onions between layers of fish. Try Marisa's take on Riojan potatoes or Echaurren croquettes. Meatballs with truffles from the nearby mountains are spectacular. Sauces never overpower their ingredients. Chocolate is used extensively in deserts and marry well with Spanish red wine from the internationally respected Rioja wine growing region. The Echaurren dining experience is a delicious mother/son creation.
