Plaza de Armas 14 20280 Hondarribia/Fuenterrabía /Guipúzcoa (Basque Country|Spain)
This great defense fortress was built by the King of Navarra Sancho Abarca in the 10th-century. The Emperor Carlos V reinforced the stronghold until the wall measured three meters thick, in efforts to impede the French troops on the far side of the Bidasoa. The result is a structure with a commanding severity and austerity; just five windows along the façade open to the exterior world. Inside, the completely equipped bedrooms are a bit dreary in their décor. The main living room displays canons, lances, armor and tapestries, combined with more modern elements, such as designer lamps, PVC moldings and shades of caramel. The interior patio maintains the original walls that reveal enchanting beauty nude stones that are like ruins devoured by humidity and vegetation. A hallway leads to the back of the inn where guests may discover a pleasant terrace for enjoying a cocktail while contemplating the boats in the glistening water. A hidden balcony on the third floor offers equally delightful views from two intimate and cozy chairs.
