Description

This inn seizes its name from a poem by Juan Ramón Jiménez published in Olvidos de Granada; it drinks the essence of Granada portrayed by the Noble Prize laureate with all his verve. The gardens of Generalife, the path de los Tristes the Alhambra are just some of the silent onlookers, observing the coming and going of travelers. The inns is located next to the Plaza Nueva, where the Darro River forms its curve, watering the city’s history so to maintain it afloat always. The magic discovered by the poet here reinforces the spirit of the inn, sited in a 16th century building, which encloses a foyer, a sitting room and cafeteria, the old Nazarí water deposit now the dinning room, a lounge and library, and finally the renaissance patio surrounded by columns with a stone fountain from which water perpetually hums, concealing the Ladrón de Agua (The Water Thief). The bedrooms are doused with views of the Alhambra, and they evoke Arab contemplation with whitewashed walls, oriental rugs, and a great deal of wood and handcrafts. Melisendra, The Moon Peers Out, New Heart, The Sunbathed Gypsy Girl… are just some of the suggestive rooms distributed along two floors and in a tower, which offers an even greater panoramic view. Words by Juan Ramón who was captivated by the enchantment which remains here still, both in and outside of these walls: “Convinced each night by the old half moon of Granada that it’s a thief, the water thief, resounds, falls, trashes, he rises, he falls… ”

Hotel recommendations

In the heart of Granada, at the foot of the old historic Albaizín neighborhood, where the Darro Rivers bends past the emblematic Plaza Nueva stands El Ladrón de Agua (The Water Theif). This 16th century palace has been renovated and rehabilitated into a small hotel with charm and magic.
It’s named after a poem written by Juan Ramón Jiménez, the Noble laureate from Andalusia, which was published in his book Olvidos de Granada. The poet’s trip here in 1924, hosted by the illustrious Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca, was to make a strong impression on him.
And it is his poem that best describes the personality of the hotel. Escaping all conventionalisms, this inn aims to be a meeting place for romantic travelers in search of the essence of Granada. The 15 bedrooms, more than anything else, attest the charm and intentions of this hotel; 8 bedrooms look to the Alhambra, and the rest reveal elements of enormous interest, such as Mudejar handcrafts and polychromatic friezes.
A beautiful Renaissance style patio is flanked with svelte columns with a handsome elliptical fountain in the center that spurts water, both a symbol of Granada and source of poetic inspiration. There is a sitting room complete with a cafeteria. The old Nazarí water deposit has been transformed into the dinning room where guests can relish moments of dining and conversing. The combination of these ambiances ideal for reading, resting and chatting, in addition to an attentive staff and ample activities program, is certainly motive enough for you to be seduced to coming to Granada by this Ladrón de Agua.
