Description

Practically on the French boarder and very close the sea, where the Pyrenees bows down stands Can Xiquet, a small hotel that has 17 serene and refreshing bedrooms with excellent views of the green Mediterranean. The main house, a newly constructed building, enjoys huge windows that create a unique frame for the scenery in the Empordà region that reveals the Mountain of Albera, the far off town of Cantallops and lush beech tree forests. And to complement the natural light streaming in from the windows, a minimalist style. Bedrooms are outfitted with modern furnishings, angular geometry and neutral colors, wicker, crystal… elements that flirt with the rustic essence of the wooden ceiling beams and exposed stonewalls. The sitting rooms induce reading beside designer lamps and among the paintings on temporary exhibition. A nicely arranged terrace extends into the garden alongside the pool.

Since 2005, new management has begun to offer different kinds of attentions for travelers who aren’t looking for complementary activities or stimuli. For example, when availability permits guests may stay in their rooms until five in the afternoon. This makes Can Xiquet more than a rural hotel, it’s an Eden of nature, a place to forget about stresses and live it up.

ROOMS WE RECOMMEND:

Huge wall-to-wall windows are prized in the best rooms, particularly the so-called Puig Neulós, where views of the horizon is like a cinematographic projection of the mountains of Ampurdán, in which the moon passes by for the firmament. Why turn on the television when the real show is in the sky? Furthermore, the room offers even more space than necessary, quality furnishings and generous equipment. And in this remote spot, anyone can connect to Internet from his or her portable computer without the least bit off fuss. On the desk, an informative folder helps guests plan excursions in the area.

EATING:

The restaurant at the hotel serves creative Mediterranean cuisine. Products from the Ampurdán and an exotic ingredient here and there. Some of the recommendations by chef Stephane Hallemans are: seasoned tuna and pineapple sauce with chilled strawberry couli accompanied by quenelle of green risotto, or their dessert version of gin and tonic.
