Description

This hotel is a bridge spanning the gap between history and current ornamental minimalism as a marked example to understand the new wave of monumental restoration. This old monastery inhabited by the monks of Lóios, consecrated to the Assumption of Mary on the eve of its celebration about 1527, was the location chosen to provide the city of Arraiolos, the quintessential land of Portuguese carpets, with a referential lodging. Sparing no resources, the surrounding valley was strengthened with new forest areas and new waterways. And the monastic structure in bare stone peppered with gargoyles and pinnacles was annexed a functional and modernist building by José Paulo dos Santos that houses immense bedrooms far removed from the cells of the blue friars. Well understood harmony also in the decoration, based on the textile potential of the surrounding area, in the neutral tones of the bedrooms and in fashion design furniture. A pousada for living the latest atmospheres or losing oneself in the baroque fantasies of the convent’s church and in the charm of its cloisters.

They all stand out for their spaciousness, but suite 103 is the one that causes most admiration.

SURROUNDINGS:

Visiting any of the handcraft workshops and stores in Arraiolos is a must. The handmade wool carpets and tapestries have been famous for more than 5 centuries. The Romanic-gothic castle guarding the city stands out among the most important monuments of this small village.
