Ronda de San Francisco 31 13270 Almagro /Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Mancha|Spain)
Located at an important spot along Cervantes´ trail in the middle of the Manchegan lowlands of Almagro, this Franciscan Monastery was built in 1596 and funded by Jerónimo Dávila de la Cueva. Four centuries later, another contemplative congregation, the enthusiastic visitors of historic inns, now enjoys this accommodation. The bedrooms are perfectly equipped. Amplified and retouched, these occupy the monks’ old cells. Designer touches are well conjugated with the formal look of the original earth wares and forged iron pieces, which reveal the human hand of traditional crafts. There are no less than 14 interior patios surrounded by galleries, where only the hum of the water fountains and the trill of birds is heard, isolating exterior noises to provide guests a therapy against stress. We have the architects and interior designers to thank for creating spaces with a certain cheer and an indisputable taste, far from the obvious use of ironworks and Castilian furniture. From the offset, this labyrinth of patios, passageways, frescos and indoor plants kindles the sprit and quiets the nerves. The only detail that offsets this establishment is the green logotype that identifies historic inns, which is multiplied to no end. The primitive disposition of the rooms has been respected as much as possible, the dinning room occupies the old refectory naturally, and the bar is housed in the convent’s original two-story bodega, where the old wine jugs have been made into tables. In the open air of the cloister, complete with its well in the middle, a lace maker frequents the establishment to show guests the bounty of her labor. Renovated in 1999, the bedrooms present a fresh appearance. The furniture pieces have been painted in tones of red ocher, grays and greens… The bathrooms lined with marble are modern and welcoming. There are five bedrooms designed for handicapped guests.
