Description

A great deal of water has flown below this millenary mill that the García Figuero brothers transformed into an inn. Free of all needless accents, an extreme rustic style impregnates the interior spaces that feature authentic clay flooring, hand carved wood and box curtains of old. Amid the stillness of the stone and flatlands of Burgos, which is only interrupted by gusts of wind, the establishment on the banks of the Aranzuela River releases therapeutic charm. Bedrooms preserve the spirit of the original mill, baptized with names related to the trade: Wheat, Channel, Chute, Crown and Turbine. In spite of their comfort, their Castilian asceticism is noted; while there are those who might long for a phone or a television at the foot of the bed, after savoring a tender Salaverri-style suckling pig in the restaurant, one is better off going for a brisk stroll among the willows in the garden than dozing off in front of the TV.

Our Critic review

ROOMS WE RECOMMEND:

On the top floor their are two rooms baptized in honor of the old inhabitants, such as Los Palomares with 2x2 meter beds. La Turbina is somewhat more spacious than the rest.

EATING:

The hotel has a reputable restaurant that offers typical dishes from the region, such as scrambled mushrooms and eggs, roasted suckling pig, or the house specialty: veal chops cooked under a stone. In Aranda de Duero (18 km), El Ciprés Restaurant (Plaza de Primo de Rivera, 1. Tel: 947 50 74 14) serves one of the best examples of the Aranda´s famous roasted lamb. Traditional ambiance and bodega made up of regional bottles. Menu: between 21 and 30 euros.

SURROUNDINGS:

Ethnology museum: Roman villa of Baños de Valdearados: mosaic of Baco. Peñaranda de Duero (8 km): 15th century castle; Palace of Zuñiga Avellaneda, 16th century: renaissance handcrafts; Colligate of Santa Ana: alter by the school of Ventura Rodríguez. This town boasts the oldest pharmacy in Spain today: Botica Ximeno, founded in the 13th century. Roman villa of Clunia en Peñalba de Castro (24 km). Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos (29 km). Aranda de Duero (18 km).
