Description

This is one of the flagships of the Portuguese pousada network, in the National Park of Penha, Guimarães. Partially reconstructed and restored, the 12th century monastery of Santa Marinha da Costa still hears the echoes of the Augustinian monks’ sandals resound in its halls. The work of Fernando Távora in the mid 80s won the National Architecture Award, preserving the medieval flavor of the convent as well as subsequent constructions such as the 16th century cloister or the 17th century fountain. Inside, the bare white walls are decorated with 18th century tiles in an attempt to break the monastic sobriety of the common areas. Dark and noble wood in the furniture, canopies decorating the monastic bedrooms and admirable views upon the palaces of Guimarâes complete the set.

Our Critic review

ROOMS WE RECOMMEND:

The suite escapes from the rigor exhibited in the rest of the cells. A Portuguese-shaped bed and bedspreads matching the curtains are a sign for good dreams. In the living room there is a sofa in red tones that makes way for the bathroom in red marble.

EATING:

The pousada offers a menu based on Galician soup, codfish, lamb stew and other dishes and desserts from Guimarães.

SURROUNDINGS:

Going down a steep asphalt slope you reach the center of Guimarães in barely ten minutes. There is another historic pousada, Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, on Santa María square, built in a common 13th century house. You must visit the 10th century castle; the palace of the Dukes of Bragança, as well as the churches of São Francisco and los Santos. A 19 km drive away is the small city of Barcelos, known for its typical cockerel figures.
