Description

Never had a decadent monument had such an astounding and different resurrection. Awarded as one of the most relevant works of contemporary Portuguese architecture, this pousada occupies the old Cistercian monastery of Amares, on the left bank of the Cávado River. Architect Eduardo Souto de Moura put an end to the continuous attempts by Portuguese institutions to return its glory through tourism. The result of his work is a work of avant-garde genius that goes beyond the eclecticism of contrast: it has its own personality. Among many other things, one can contemplate a minimalist canvas under the same dramatic stone ceiling that once housed the prayers of 12th century monks and feel that it has always been this way... It has to be seen.

THE WORST:

Not always the most esthetic is the most comfortable and that is what happens here in some spaces such as the entrance, very suggestive in its minimalist half-light, but uncomfortable in the long run.

Peneda-Gêres National Park (29 km). Dolmens and menhirs among waterfalls and streams. Albergaría Forest. Caldas de Gêres, roman spa with fluorinated waters recommended for skin diseases. It is the only Portuguese National Park.
Braga (15 km). Plaza de la República, cathedral (12-16th centuries), Sta. Cruz church (17th century), casas das Gelosias (urban architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries), keep and Biscainhos and Raio palaces (18th century).
