Avenida Diagonal 661-671 08028 Barcelona (Catalonia|Spain)
This hotel undoubtedly boasts one of the best hotel architectures that can be seen today in Barcelona. Designed in 1992 by Carlos Ferrater, its plan formulated upon two white concrete and steel wings faces the geographic north of the city - Collserola Tower and Tibidabo -, in the section of Diagonal Avenue that leads out to the highway to Lleida and Tarragona. An impressive atrium in the shape of a ship bow with two panoramic elevators receives the visitor and leads him towards the central island, a mundane meeting place where everything happens in the hotel. A cocktail? A business interview? A piano toccata?
Around this lobby space, which is still the best hotel atrium in Spain, are distributed the meeting halls between the ground and mezzanine levels, decorated with temporary exhibitions by acclaimed artists (Chillida, Manolo Valdés, Ràfols Casamada, Guinovart…). Upstairs, the bedrooms offer a more common appearance within the architectural spectacle outside. They all have light sensors on the headboards, a work area equipped with the last in communication technologies, marble-lined bathrooms and anti-steam mirrors, as well as an independent space for the shower and the toilet. Comfortable, functional and very elegant. Floor 12 acts as an executive floor, including a fast invoicing area.
The outside gardens in front of the hotel house a spectacular swimming pool and 4,000 square meters of areas dedicated to the practice of different sports. The culmination of such emblematic facilities is the Convention Center of Cataluña, which earned Carlos Ferrater and José María Cartanyá the National Architecture Award.
