Description

Grand Hotel Central stands right in the middle of Via Laietana, in front of the Gothic neighborhood, and beside the Santa Caterina Market with its soaring, undulated roof –masterpiece of the architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. The hotel was built as residency for the former president of the Catalonian government, Francesc Cambó, and was transformed into a hotel by his grandson, Pau Guardans i Cambó. The establishment evokes the splendor of Barcelonan society in the 1920s, bourgeois, happy and very European. While so little remains of that era, this hotel unconditionally safeguards a few singular niches, such as the neoclassic stairway landing and the poised tall ceilings. The interior design was entrusted to Sandra Tarruella and Isabel López, the official decorators for the group Tragaluz and designers of the hotel Omm. The ambiance they have created here is soothing, neutral, minimalist and very comfortable. The rooms have subdued lighting. This is due in part to the narrow windows inherited from the original structure, but the designers have also strived to bestow a relaxing sensation throughout the building. The very best part of the hotel is found on the rooftop, a place for simply chilling-out. A wooden deck surrounds a pool that has the form of a box with water overflowing to the city below and the sea beyond. By night, lanterns reflect on the pool water all the good living this city has to offer.
