Mata do Buçaco 3050-261 Luso /Aveiro (Beira Litoral|Portugal)
Upon the remnants of an old Carmelite convent surrounded by groomed gardens, the King Dom Carlos created a palatial building of Manuelino-style, which was later to become a luxury hotel, a lavish sight. Only the silhouette can be seen from the access highway but there is a lookout point suspended in a lush forest of exotic cedar trees, from where guests can admire the hotel’s grandeur. The Italian architect Manini, with the help of a court of outstanding landscape designers, stone workers and interior decorators, have made the establishment what it is today. The baroque façade boasts mosaics by Jorge Colaço that narrate the history of Portugal and its discoveries. Frescos by Carlos Reis decorate the halls and the stairways, carved with stone lace, that lead to the bedrooms. Once deserving of kings, the building’s conservation doesn’t meet the level of a name so emblematic, that of a true national monument.
